MOVING THE IMMOVABLE OBJECT

The United States is providing a practical demonstration of what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object. The Irresistible Force is the awesome and cocksure aggregation of minority, special-interest pressure groups which are committed to forcible and complete racial integration. The Immovable Object is the loose coalition of homespun States’ Rights groups which just ain’t having any today, thank you!

At present, the Irresistible Force clearly seems to be having the best of the fight. To begin with it is much better organized, much more politically sophisticated and obviously takes orders from a “high command” hidden somewhere within the jungle fastness of New York City. These people hold the entire physical and moral power of the United States government securely within their clammy little fists, as well as the strings on the public purse. Further. they have a practical monopoly on the northern press, radio, television and the movies. They control the big, tax-free foundations, the schools and the vast bulk of the churches. Looking at the Irresistible Force alone, one would quickly conclude that their victory is but a matter of time. But let’s look over the Immovable Object before coming to a definite decision.

The forces opposing integration differ radically from those favoring it in many ways. They are relatively new, relatively unorganized and inexperienced, and relatively under-financed.
Then what makes it an “immovable object,” you ask? Simply this: (1) The groups are not committed to “gradualism” or “moderation” but instead are flatly opposed to any and all integration, and (2) Whereas the forces which promote integration have both reached and passed their peak of power, the forces rejecting it have not yet reached even a reasonable fraction of their potential strength.
